Illinois\u2019s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Evironmental Protection Agency. In Illinois, medical waste is classified as \u201cPotentially Infectious Medical Waste\u201d (PIMW). The complete detailed disposal requirements are outlined on the state EPA website:\u00a0Potentially Infectious Medical Waste\u00a0 In addition to the state medical waste environmental regulations there are some Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules that apply to medical\/infectious waste. Illinois is one of 26 states covered entirely by the federal OSHA program.
